On 22 May 2013 Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale murdered 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby close to his Woolwich barracks. Adebolajo and Adebowale, both British Muslim converts of Nigerian descent with low-level gang links and suspected jihadist interests, knocked Rigby over in their car before attacking him with knives. Adebolajo attempted to decapitate Rigby with a meat cleaver. When an armed police response team arrived, Adebowale brandished an unloaded 90-year-old Dutch-produced KNIL 9.4 mm revolver and was shot by armed police.
