Assessment questions

  • Critically compare and contrast existing international initiatives towards the empowerment of youth and women. How are they similar and how are they different? How effective do you think they are in practice? Provide reasons for your answers.
  • Discuss and evaluate inherent tensions which can exist between the need to provide 'safe places' for discontent to be expressed, legitimate freedom of expression and national security imperatives. Where tensions exist, which element do you believe should take priority over the other elements, and why?
  • Critically evaluate, with reference to relevant international law principles, circumstances when a 'targeted killing' may be lawful and unlawful.
  • Discuss the role of private companies in monitoring incitement of terror and the possible problems that such arbitrary power along with reliance on algorithms can lead to.
  • Consider in what ways the fundamental freedom of religion and/or expression may come under strain due to the activities of terrorist groups and/or States in their counter-terrorist activities. What are the potential longer-term implications of such tensions upon fundamental freedoms?
