African regional and sub-regional organizations

• African Union.

In addition to the AU, a number of African sub-regional organizations play important roles in counter-terrorism. These include:

• Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
• Southern African Development Community (SADC)
• The Institute of Security Studies, based in South Africa, has developed a list of African sub-regional counter-terrorism tools.

To assist Member States in implementing their obligations under the 1999 Convention, 2004 Protocol and other international/national obligations, the AU Commission has developed:

• African Union, Assembly (2011). The African Model Law on Counter Terrorism. Assembly/AU/Dec.369(XVII).
• The African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism was also established.
