Possible class structure

This section contains recommendations for a teaching sequence and timing intended to achieve learning outcomes through a three-hour class.

NOTE: The class structure proposed is merely indicative. As students' prior knowledge and exposure to these issues varies widely, the lecturer should adapt contents as well as the time suggested for each component of the Module, according to the educational and social context, needs of the students and as otherwise appropriate.

It is proposed that the Module begins with an interactive exercise whereby students are asked to identify the rights held by smuggled migrants (Exercise 1).

Discussion on the rights smuggled migrants are/might be entitled to (board exercise) (app. 10 minutes)

Lecture

in line with the topics described under ' Introduction and learning outcomes' (app. 85 minutes)

Exercise 3 (75 minutes)

• The class is divided into two groups, with the 'Facts' of the case being delivered to the groups
• Both groups shall analyse the case and identify: 1) what are, if any, the human rights of migrants that have been violated; and 2) what are, if any, States' corresponding obligations. The answers should be written (45 minutes)
• The groups shall then exchange the answers, with each group examining the responses of the other (10 minutes each group)
• Each group is to present its remarks on the answers of the other group (5 minutes)
• A discussion should follow, as appropriate, with the lecturer adding missing points (15 minutes).
