This module is a resource for lecturers

Student assessment

In addition to the exercises, other assessment tools used in this Module are review questions and homework assignments.

Review questions

The questions can also be used to promote class discussions during the lecture.

  • Why is the protection of intellectual property important?
  • What are the different types of intellectual property?
  • Name two examples of international and regional instruments protecting intellectual property. What type(s) of intellectual property do they protect?
  • What theories have been used to explain cyber-enabled copyright and/or trademark offences?
  • What national, regional and international protection and prevention measures have been implemented to protect intellectual property?

Homework Assignments

Students can be assigned one or more of the following assignments to be completed before class as either a written homework assignment (one to three pages long) and/or be part of the class discussion:

Homework #1: Other Theories

What other theories (i.e., those not covered in the Module and core readings) have been used to explain cyber-enabled intellectual property crime?

[Note: This homework should be completed before class].

Homework #2: Group Exercise Intellectual Property: Laws, Theories, and Practice

Students should be randomly assigned to a group before the class to enable them to complete the assignment before the class meets. Each group should be randomly assigned one type of intellectual property.

Instruct the students to research the type of intellectual property they have been assigned and identify:

  • International and regional laws related to their assigned form of intellectual property
  • A theory that explains their assigned form of intellectual property
  • Prevention and protection efforts targeting their assigned form of intellectual property

[Note: This homework should be completed before class].

Homework #3: Evolution of Cyber-Enabled Intellectual Property Crime

In what ways has cyber-enabled intellectual property crime evolved? How have the changing business models of creative industries (e.g., from downloading to streaming creative works such as music) influenced this evolution?

[Note: This homework should be completed before class.]
