This case relates to an arrest made by Vietnamese authorities on 24 June 2012, when a vessel was apprehended anchoring at a local beach in Vietnam's Ba-Ria Vung Tu province. 10 people were sleeping on board at that time, others onshore. Upon questioning, one of the men on board the vessel confessed that he was one the persons involved in organising the vessel and sought to take 25 persons from Vietnam to Australia. Three persons involved in organising the vessel were arrested at the time of the interception. Information about the criminal proceedings against them, if any, was not available at the time of writing.
The men involved in organising of this venture received between USD 11,000 and 14,000 from each of the passengers to take them from Vietnam to Australia. VND 250 million were used to buy the vessel that was to be used in this smuggling venture.
